Climate Policy Countdown
Selected climate commitments arranged by target year, with years remaining, regional spread, and the source and accounting notes open for inspection.
What is available
A static, hand-checked set of thirty climate commitments from governments and the European Union, with target years from 2030 to 2070. This preview does not include inventory trends, policy assessments, alerts, or measured progress. A target year says when a government says it will act, not whether it will.
How to read it
- Fig. 01 places each commitment on a line from 2026 to 2070. The distance from the left edge is the years remaining.
- Fig. 02 groups the same marks by region, so clusters of years and gaps between regions are visible.
- Fig. 03 ranks commitments by how soon the target year falls.
- A circle is a target year, often a reduction against a baseline. A diamond is a net-zero year. Hover, focus or tap a mark for the wording and source.
Selection and method
The sample is selective, not exhaustive. It favours large emitters and a spread of regions, income levels and legal forms, and it leaves out most countries. A record was included only when its wording and year could be read in an official text or in a Climate Action Tracker country summary, checked on 8 October 2026. Where a figure could not be confirmed, the commitment was left out rather than estimated.
Counts of marks, medians and regional groups describe this sample only. They are not a global tally.
Target years
Choose a year to narrow every view, or show net-zero years only. A target year is not a precise delivery deadline.
Showing 30 of 30 commitments.
Fig. 01 · The countdown
Commitments on a line from 2026 to 2070
Each mark is one commitment, stacked above its target year. The figures under the axis count the years remaining from 2026. A circle is a target year; a diamond is a net-zero year.
Select a mark, by pointer or keyboard, to read the commitment, its legal status and its source.
Fig. 02 · The spread
Target years by region
A strip plot: one row per region, one mark per commitment, on the same year scale as Fig. 01. Marks that share a year are stacked. Regions are a loose grouping chosen for this preview.
30 shown · 17 net-zero years · median net-zero year 2050 · range 2030–2070
Select a mark, by pointer or keyboard, to read the commitment, its legal status and its source.
Fig. 03 · Years remaining
Nearest target years first
Each line runs from 2026 to the target year, drawn to the same scale as the axis ending in 2070. Net-zero years are labelled in the text at the right. Years remaining is a count, not a forecast of delivery.
